The Donald W. Reynolds Cardiovascular Clinical Research Center at Johns Hopkins Medicine began operation on July 1, 2003. The Center is designed to apply the full armamentarium of Johns Hopkins contemporary biology and population science to address sudden cardiac death (SCD), with a view to answering the following questions: - What are the functional and structural features of the heart that pose the greatest risk for lethal arrhythmias?
- Can we devise biomarkers (based on expression profiling or proteomics) to discriminate risk of SCD?
- What genomic factors underlie risk for SCD, and how predictive are they when evaluated prospectively in large populations?
- Does aggressive community-based intervention alter outcomes in high-risk patients?
- Can effective cell- or gene-based treatments be developed to prevent ventricular arrhythmias in patients at high risk?
